MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome u2014 one of the few peptides of mitochondrial origin with systemic hormonal effects. First characterised in 2015 by Dr. Pinchas Cohen (USC), it activates AMPK in skeletal muscle, increasing glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation independent of diet.
